Mellow Mushroom - Ballantyne

Mellow Mushroom
Ballantyne
As soon asI was brought in the sketch request for the new location of Mellow Mushroom, I knew this was going to be a great project. Working with such a unique brand as Mellow Mushroom allowed me to step out of what would be considered a normal sign and do something very special. I knew Dimensional Sign foam was going to be the way to go. The initial concept won over the clients immediately. Once the final drawings were finished, The fabrication began. As soon as the fabrication department got started I knew this was going to be something to be very proud of. We started with 2” thick sign foam stacked to achieve the desired thickness, as much as 12” in some areas. We hand carved, shaped and sanded the mushroom, grass, rocks and the logo. Over the course of few weeks everything began to take shape. The paint was layered and airbrushed with Pearl Akzo Nobel Paints to bring the Mellow Mushroom concept to life. Once the painting was complete it was sprayed with a Pearl tinted clear coat to add even more sparkle. The Mellow Mushroom letters are mounted to ¾” clear acrylic push thru’s with second surface red vinyl to give it a red halo. One thing the customer really wanted was for the mushroom “warts” to be illuminated. So we imbedded small LED cans into the foam and covered them with yellow acrylic bezels. Additional depth was given to the mushroom by recessing an illuminated digital print, of the underside of the mushroom, into the background pan. The sign is also illuminated with LED’s around the perimeter to halo the entire sign and make it visually pop off the wall. If you are in the Charlotte area, it is a must see, if nothing else you can get some great pizza.
